The Holiday Break: Time to Relax and Enjoy the Library

The Holiday Break: Time to Relax and Enjoy the Library

For those of us – or is it most of us? — who are harried most of the time, the holiday break presents a wonderful opportunity to spend some leisure time at the Library.

Take out that novel you’ve been meaning to read, borrow a movie, or have a member of the staff walk you through how to download e-books or audiobooks to your phone, computer or tablet before you start your holiday vacation or stay-cation.

The break is also a chance to attend some of the Library’s programs, whether it be an ongoing program such as Story Time or one of the special events scheduled for the break – there is truly something for everyone.

The Library is closed on Monday, December 24 and Tuesday, December 25 for the Christmas holiday. Stop by when it re-opens on Wednesday, December 26 at one or these programs!

Story Time
Wednesday, December 26, 10:15 – 10:45 a.m.
The Library’s popular Story Time program, which is usually held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, will be held as always on Wednesday morning during the break. Caregivers must be in attendance and participate with the children they accompany. The Library requests there be no phone use or talking during Story Time. Because of this program’s popularity, a ticketing system is used to prevent overcrowding.

Learn How to Face Paint!
Wednesday, December 26, 3 – 5 p.m.
Ever wanted to know how to face paint? This program for older children and young teens (ages 9 – 13), is being taught by face-painter extraordinaire Nicole Jones, who will teach the basics. Admittance is limited to the first ten people who show up.

Mary Poppins: See the Original 1964 Film!
Wednesday, December 26, 12 – 2:15 p.m.
The first of two Mary Poppins-themed programs during the break, this is your chance to see the 1964 classic starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke – maybe before heading out to see the new Mary Poppins Returns. This movie is rated G.

Mary Poppins Tea Party
Thursday, December 27, 1:15 – 2:15 p.m.
In celebration of Mary Poppins and the long-awaited sequel, come to the Library for tea and wear your Mary Poppins best! This program is for children of all ages. Attendance is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

For Adults: Learn How to Zentangle
Thursday, December 27, 7 – 8:30 p.m.
Adults who are looking to relax during the break, and also would like to find an enjoyable new artistic hobby, might try Zentangle. It’s a method of creating beautiful drawings from repetitive patterns. Jill Greenbaum, a certified Zentangle instructor, will introduce attendees to the beginnings of this method and the steps to follow to draw wonderful Zentangle tiles. Each attendee will receive supplies. Registration is limited to the first 20 people.

Animal Embassy: Colors and Patterns of the Animal Kingdom
Friday, December 28, 2 – 3 p.m.
Like people, animals come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Library patrons will learn about these diverse colors and patterns and what they mean and will meet some of Animal Embassy’s Animal Ambassadors — such as a red-eyed tree frog, a red-foot tortoise, a Sinaloan milk snake, a Solomon Islands monkey-tailed skink and a chinchilla. For ages 4 and up. Attendance is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Whatever you’re doing during the break, enjoy the time with family and friends!

(Please note that the Library will be closed on December 31 and January 1 for the New Year’s holiday, and there will be no bilingual Story Time on Saturday, December 29. The Library will resume its normal schedule on Wednesday, January 2.)
