The Westchester Library System and its member Libraries are kicking off the new year with new e-services, which replace some services that expired on December 31 because they hadn’t gained traction with cardholders at WLS member libraries. Yes, it’s out with the old and in with the new, which are listed below.
In most cases, all you need is your device – mobile or computer — and your Library card number and you’re good to go.
Hoopla: Hoopla is an exciting digital media service that allows Library patrons to borrow movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comics and TV shows, all of which can be enjoyed on any screen — computer, tablet, phone, and even TV! With no waiting, titles can be streamed immediately, or downloaded for offline enjoyment later. There are hundreds of thousands of titles to choose from, with more being added daily. Go to the link above, and follow the prompts to set up an account. (You can checkout five titles per month.)
Mango Languages: Mango Languages offers simple language and culture learning in over 70 languages – from Spanish to Azerbaijani — while keeping the vibe fun and encouraging. It also has English as a second language courses for 20 different languages and even has a service that allows you to learn languages through movies! Mango not only teaches practical conversation – it also includes free mobile apps, hands-free learning features, and progress tracking.
The Merck Manuals: Offering both professional and consumer versions, The Merck Manuals are one of the world’s most widely used medical information resources. The Manuals have committed to making the best current medical information accessible to three billion health care professionals and patients on every continent by 2020.
PressReader: PressReader offers an endless stream of top news stories from all over the world, along with other features to read, discuss and share, with full issues of thousands of top newspapers and magazines, just as they appear in print. It even offers The New York Times crossword puzzles, editorials, and horoscopes over the Web or through a mobile app.
The e-resources that no longer have a contract with WLS are Flipster, InstantFlix/IndieFlix, OneClickDigital/Recorded Books and Rocket Languages. If you have suggestions for e-resources you’d like to see added, please let the Library know so that staff can advocate for them. Decisions on e-services are made on a county-wide basis.
