See below for what the Library’s elementary school-aged book clubs are reading in May!
First-Grade Book Club: Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall
Monday, May 13, 4:30 – 5 p.m.
Jabari is preparing to jump off the diving board, but despite all of his preparation – from swimming lessons to stretching – he still has to overcome his fears. Fortunately, Dad is there to help encourage him to take the leap.
Second-Grade Book Club: Like Bug Juice on a Burger by Julie Sternberg
Thursday, May 23, 4 – 5 p.m.
This sequel to Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie, also features Eleanor, who now finds herself on her way to summer camp, where there are plenty of bugs, no electricity, awful food and the horrors of swim class. Nonetheless, readers will discover how Eleanor survives – and thrives.
Third Grade Book Club: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
Monday, May 13, 5 – 5:30 p.m.
The first of a trilogy of fantasy novels by Chinese-American author Grace Lin, this book tells the story of Minli, a girl who lives with her parents in a hut. She is inspired to find the Old Man on the Moon to learn the secrets of life, as he is the focus of one of her father’s folktales. She has quite a few adventures along the way, as the book explores “themes of family, hope, mystery, courage, and classic Chinese folk tales.”
Fourth-Grade Book Club: A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park
Monday, May 20, 4 – 5 p.m.
This novel, winner of the Newbery Medal in 2002, takes place in 12th century Korea. Tree-ear, a 13-year-old orphan, is obsessed with becoming a potter, like the master potter in his village, Min. When Tree-ear becomes Min’s assistant, he finds the job involves everything from managing Min’s temper to hauling clay, but Tree-ear will still do anything to make his mark “even if it means taking a long, solitary journey on foot to present Min’s work in the hope of a royal commission . . . even if it means arriving at the royal court with nothing to show but a single celadon shard.”
