The Library has a new display of a collection of pysanky, or Ukrainian Easter eggs, loaned to us from a private collector. Pysanky are hand-decorated with intricate colorful patterns using a complicated wax and dying technique and feature a variety of symbols and motifs with particular meanings. The 90-plus eggs in this collection have been made by several generations in one family. The name pysanky comes from the Ukrainian word “pysanky,” meaning “to write,” as the patterns are written in wax with a stylus and then dyed multiple times in multiple colors using a batik method. You can also learn more about pysanky by visiting the Library’s table on Harmon Avenue during the Pelham Springs Forward Festival on April 10, 10 a.m. to 2 pm.
