Circulation – Borrowing

When you borrow materials, they need to be returned to the Library in the same condition as when they were borrowed. Items must be returned in their entirety (i.e. all parts must be present together) before item can be checked in. You may return materials at any Westchester Library System member library.

But please remember that other libraries in Westchester may have different lending and fine structures.

If you owe more than $5.00 in actual or estimated bills, you may not borrow materials from this library, until your account is paid down and/or items are checked in. Fines cannot be paid until items are checked in. You can now pay bills online. For more information, see Westchester Library System’s instructions here. Please note a $2.50 convenience fee is added to the transaction.

Renewing Items: Please see the How do I… page for complete information on renewing materials.

Extended Summer Loans: Books are available for Extended Summer Loans. This may be a great option if you don’t have enough time to complete a book in 3 weeks and especially nice for long books such as Les Miserables, War and Peace, Anna Karenina, etc. It’s also an option to consider if you plan on traveling for longer than 3 weeks–the average book circulation period. Extended summer loans are only available for older (not new) fiction and non-fiction books in print format only. Summer Reading titles for students are also prohibited. Please ask the Circulation Services Team for more information. We’re happy to try and accommodate your particular needs.

Exterior Book Drop: Our book drop located by the Carol Place Entrance allows you to return materials at your convenience. Items left in the book drop before the Library opens will be checked in for the previous day.

  • There may be times during programs that we lock the book drop as to not disturb the program presenter and or the enjoyment of our attendees.
  • If the Book Drop is full or clogged, please do not leave materials outside the book drop. Borrowers will be responsible for missing or lost items not checked in. While this doesn’t happen very often, please call us and let us know you could not leave the return you item(s).

Modest Fee for Non-Resident Holds: Starting July 1, 2015, the Library will charge non-Pelham cardholders a modest fee of 25 cents for each physical item — a book, DVD, CD, and so forth — placed on hold or reserved and picked up at the Pelham location. This fee will be manually added to the cardholder’s account, even if the item is not picked up. Traditional inter-library loans — requests for materials outside of the Westchester Library System — will not incur this fee.

Lost Materials: Library materials must be paid for.
  • No replacements permitted.
  • Once lost items are paid for, if they are later found, they are yours to keep. If you wish you may donate the items to the Library.

The library contracts with Unique Management Services, Inc., a library materials recovery service. There is a $10.00 fee if your account goes into collection. Please see the attached brochure below for more information.
