Children's Programs
Providing current, interesting, and lively programs is the aim of Children's Services. The Library has three program seasons: Fall, Winter/Spring and Summer. We usually have our seasons planned well in advance. Here is an overview of our regularly scheduled programs:
-
Storytime for babies through preschool takes place throughout the year, including vacation weeks and summer. The Junior League of Pelham's (JLP) Library Partners Program has volunteer readers to lead the Storytime program during the School Calendar. The Children's Librarian, as well as special guests, also does Storytime programs.
-
K-Day: An annual rite and Pelham Library tradition, every September we welcome Kindergartners into the Library to receive their first library card! This fun event is generally held the last Saturday of the month and features balloon sculptures for Kindergartners and face painting provided by our Friends of the Library.
-
Summertime is a busy time when the Summer Reading Program is in full swing. Each year is unique with a new theme and a series of new events developed around the state-wide theme. We usually have over 150 children grade school age sign up to read and to collect prizes. The opening event is usually held on or near the last day of school and the ending ice cream party is sometime in August.
-
We have seasonal craft programs for Halloween, winter holidays, Valentine's and Mother's Day.
-
Chess classes are offered for all ages usually during the winter season and challenge everyone's abilities.
-
We have a puppet workshop in the fall also lead by the JLP's Library Partners Program. Children make their own puppets and act out short folk tales, fables and other stories.
-
The New York Council for the Humanities has provided grants for Together--Book Talk for Kids and Parents programs for the past three years.
-
Throughout the year we have music, magic, animal visits, and learning programs geared to children's interests.
Please check the calendar for dates, times and registration requirements.
